The Mdzananda Animal Clinic recently celebrated their founder Mr Joe, who was just a regular man who saw his neighbours neglecting their pets; he taught them to treat their pets with care.
Khayelitsha, South Africa – The Mdzananda Animal Clinic is a permanent, NPO, veterinary council registered animal clinic in the Khayelitsha township of Cape Town. The clinic helps serve a community of over 300,000 animals, ensuring they are well cared for, vaccinated and sterilised.
The clinic was founded in 1996 by Mr Joe and sees around 700 animals a month. They also work to re-home strays and educate the community members on the importance of caring for the animals in the community.
The Mdzananda Animal Clinic decided to look back at when they were established in 1996 by a community member named Mr Joe. Mr Joe’s story is inspiring and because of him, hundreds of thousands of animals have been saved, re-homed and blessed with loving families.
“He saw that his surrounding community members weren’t looking after their pets. He went door to door pushing a shopping trolley with food and a bucket of water to feed and wash pets.
Soon he attracted volunteers (mainly young children, one of which is still an Animal Welfare Assistant at Mdzananda today). A bath was donated and Mr Joe and his volunteers started bathing dogs.
Thereafter a shipping container was donated and it became a Saturday only clinic.
Today, nearly 24 years later, Mdzananda is a fully-fledged animal hospital treating up to 700 community pets per month.
Mr Joe, who is now elderly, still visits regularly and has recently planted a vegetable garden on Mdzananda’s premises to show community members how productive you can be with a tiny space.”
