It was a pleasant surprise to learn that President Ramaphosa invited a hopeful young student to assist him in writing his SONA speech.
Cape Town, South Africa (14 February 2020) – The world wants to know who Sinoyolo Qumba is. She was introduced to the world during the 2020 State of the Nation address. President Cyril Ramaphosa credited her for helping write some of his speech.
Sinoyolo Qumba is a 17-year-old, grade 11 student from Gibson Pillay Learning Academy in Lenasia. She wrote to the president to discuss the unemployment, the high rate of crime and the prevalence of teenage pregnancies in her community.
Sinoyolo got to meet the president on Wednesday and discussed her concerns with him. When he finally got to start his speech, he thanked her for her help. The shy student blushed and covered her face when the camera spanned over.
Before SONA kicked off, Sinoyolo said she hoped that the president would take her advice. She also spoke to the Daily Maverick and said she is hoping to attend Wits in 2022. She is still deciding what she will study but is leaning towards accounting.
