Frankie Du Toit shared the story of his mother, a high school teacher, who has retired after 50 years at the age of 70 and how her school gave her a guard of honour.
Johannesburg, South Africa (04 August 2020) – Frankie Du Toit was left in awe of how the school where his mother teaches reacted on her last day of work. Elmarie Du Toit has been a teacher for 50 years, she taught maths and loved every minute of her job.
Frankie is part of the 94.7 Breakfast team and many of his listeners reached out to share how his mother’s story touched their lives. In a thread on Twitter, he details his mother’s passion for teaching and how she only retired because she had to.
She plans to keep on teaching thanks to online options now available. Frankie also shared how the school students bought an owl in honour of her, to place at the gate where they enter each day.
“I’ve got to share this with all of you. After 50 years of teaching my mom retired at the age of 70 and the whole school gave her a guard of honour.
Like so many amazing teachers in our country she’s dedicated her life to helping kids grow and learn. She’s a powerhouse of a woman that’s not even let her fight with cancer get in the way of a day of teaching.
1000s of young minds have sat in her maths classes over the past 5 decades and I have never met a pupil that didn’t love Mrs Du Toit. She made maths fun and was tenacious at helping every child that struggled.
The kids bought a little porcelain owl called “Ellie” (Her name is Elmarie) and she placed it in the garden so they can remember her when they walk past it at the gate.
Now this is the most incredible part of the woman I’m lucky to have as a mother. She doesn’t want to stop teaching. At the grown age of 70 she has taken it upon herself to learn all the digital tools of the 4IR, to continue teaching online! That’s how much she cares
I have the worlds respect for all the teachers like my mom who dedicate their lives to our children. You all deserve a guard of honour.”
