Community raise almost R200 000 in just 48 hours for Wayne Giles – a South African who was shot for his cellphone.

Johannesburg, South Africa (24 October 2020) – On Sunday the 18th of October, life dealt Nabeel Khan’s dear friend – Wayne Giles – a bad hand when he was shot during an attempted robbery.

55-year-old Giles was shot while he and his partner were on their way to The Village restaurant at 16th Street in Pretoria on Sunday afternoon. According to the restaurant, a suspect tried to rob Giles of a cellphone to which he resisted, and gunfire ensued.

Giles was shot in the back and has since undergone extensive surgery but does not have any medical aid.

“Wayne is currently still critical but stabilizing and responding well to initial damage control thoracotomy as the bullet crossed the midline going in from the left shoulder across to the right shoulder. He is currently still intubated and mechanically ventilated, ventilator support is now on minimal settings, and he is oxygenating and ventilating much better now. He is on adrenaline to provide cardiovascular support, but it is coming down and should be off completely by this weekend hopefully. We are waiting for an MRI to assess spinal cord injury. He is making good progress, and we are taking it one step at a time.”

Khan started the crowdfunding page to help him, and his family pay for the medical costs and started with a target of between R160 000 to R250 000 but managed to raise almost R200 000 in just 48 hours!
