Wendy Norrie Konco shared a message on the Cape Town Together group asking for help with her brother and two Rotary groups came together to make it happen.
Eastern Cape, South Africa (09 November 2020) – Wendy Norrie Konco’s brother ended up in a wheelchair at a young age after he tried to break up a fight. He was knocked unconscious and when he woke, was unable to move his legs.
Living in rural Eastern Cape, he has faced challenges in his wheelchair but he made it work. Now that his wheelchair is so old and falling apart, he needed a new one. The family didn’t have the funds to purchase one so Wendy asked for a helping hand.
“Good day, I’m looking for a wheelchair for my brother, he lives in Eastern Cape. His name is Vumile Konco. He is 38 years old, He was not born disabled but when he was in his early 20s he got mixed up in boys fight. That’s when the accident happened, unfortunately, he was never able to walk again.
The reason why I am looking for a wheelchair for him is that his wheelchair is not in a good condition and he is using the wires to keep it together.”
Several people started discussing how to get Vumile a new wheelchair. According to Wendy, it needed to be a strong one as Vumile uses it to get to and from his rural village.
Rotary Cape Town started connecting with colleagues in the Eastern Cape to make arrangements. A wheelchair was quickly donated to the Rotary members but now came the matter of getting it delivered to the remote village of Nabileyo.
The Rotarians worked to get the wheelchair collected by a driver in Cape Town who could get it to the Eastern Cape.
It was collected in Cape Town and transported via shuttle to Idutywa. The wheelchair was then collected by Corrine Hudson and taken to a second shuttle service that would deliver it to Vumile.
“I would like to thank everyone who contributed to this post, who allowed me to share my problem. The problem I have been trying to solve over the years, but in this group, it took a few hours to be fixed. My brother has the wheelchair, all thanks to the group, the person donated him a wheelchair, everyone who manage to make sure it is delivered at home safe.”
