Yesterday we shared the story of Ann and Andries and how he needed cataracts surgery; today, we can confirm both his surgeries have been fully funded!
Cape Town, South Africa (02 June 2021) – Ann Bennetts met Petrol Attendant Andries Mphthi some time ago. She started to notice he was having trouble seeing the numbers on the card machine. Ann asked Andries what was wrong, and he explained that he was losing his sight.
Andries works as a petrol attendant at an Engen garage in Cape Town and needs his job. However, with his eyes taking strain, his job is at risk. Andries has been on the cataracts surgery waiting list at Groote Schuur for many years, and the longer he waits, the worse his eyes become. He has a genuine fear of going blind before his name is called.
Ann was deeply moved by this and decided to lend a helping hand to raise funds to get Andries the surgery he needs. She reached out to the Wembly Eye Clinic and found out she could get both eyes sorted for R20,000. That was about 50% less than other quotes she got.
Ann set up a crowdfund to raise the money needed for Andries. The crowdfund went quiet after a month and sat at just under R10,000. It was about R600 away from being able to fund the first surgery.
Since sharing his story yesterday, we are so excited to share that Good Things Guy readers helped fully fund the second surgery for Andries. As a result, he can now have both his eyes sorted and his sight restored.
Ann confirmed that they had booked the first surgery for August. She will keep us updated on his recovery when the time comes. We will keep you all posted!
