World, meet the Scoody, a scarf/hoodie that is being made by single mothers in Kya Sands to help them earn an income through the winter.

Johannesburg, South Africa (12 July 2022) – “I Have A Name” is an incredible photo series showcasing everyday South Africans in the most phenomenal way. Proudly South African… one story at a time. The latest is a story about a group of mothers from Kya Sands.

The stories are told by incredible South Africans, raw and unedited. It’s a showcase of humanness, a reminder that behind every face is a name.

I Have A Name” is a space where an anonymous photographer (we’ll call her D) takes photos of everyday South Africans to showcase their incredible stories.

In June of this year, D launched an initiative with some of the ladies she has featured in her photo series over the years.

“I’m so excited to share this with you.

Introducing the “ Scoody” for winter for R160 It’s a scarf and hood in one and uniquely hand made by Mufaro and Progeny and with many orders , many other women in the township as well!

Mufaro and Progeny are two women who live in the sprawling Kya sands informal settlement in Fourways.”

They are both single mothers, fending for themselves and their children. D’s hope in this project was to create a sustainable and useful knitwear brand for them to start and expand. Starting simple with the “Scoody”, the hope was to get bulk orders and hopefully employ more ladies.

Within a month, the project went from Mufaro and Progeny to including more than 30 women who are now making the Scoodies to order for anyone looking for one.

D explains that the cost is low enough to build a good market and to ensure each lady earns a good profit to support her family. The ladies have recently received an order for 600 Scoodies from a corporate company, and the investment into this project has meant all these women can cover costs, even as they rise!

If you would like to support the ladies, you can place your order using the details below.

Send an email with your order request to Kyacrafts@projectpurpose.co.za

“Price is R160 and you can specify the colour as long as there is wool at Chamdor in that colour.”

“Pickup in Northriding or Olivedale or else shipping cost of R50 nationwide with small orders”

You can reach out to D at I Have A Name on Facebook here if you have any further queries.
