When Amanda noticed two municipal workers working hard to sweep the streets of Nigel, she couldn’t resist brightening their day with some ice cream and a generous dose of heart – because that’s just who she is!
Nigel, South Africa (07 October 2026) – There is goodness and kindness all around us, and a heartwarming video capturing a woman quietly brightening two municipal workers’ day is all the proof you need.
On Monday, 5 October, Amanda was unknowingly filmed performing an act of kindness for workers cleaning the streets of Nigel. Recognising that it never hurts to show a little appreciation and wanting to spread a bit of goodness their way, she handed them ice cream she’d bought nearby.
The video posted on TikTok quickly gained traction, eventually reaching Amanda and her loved ones.

In awe of how warmly people responded, Amanda’s husband, Div Horak, shared with Good Things Guy that this moment was just one example of the kindness Amanda has been showing in her community for years.
“She lives by Jesus’ teaching that we should not let our left hand know what our right hand is doing. Her kindness flows from gratitude to God for being alive, without seeking recognition,” Div says proudly.
“Her outlook on life is simple: ‘Life is a song and remains a song. Even when there are wrong notes, it is still a song’.”
Amanda is a 73-year-old retired teacher who spent 44 years teaching learners with special needs in Nigel. Sadly, however, on 9 July 2020, she experienced undeserved brutality.
“She was assaulted in our home and left for dead. My daughter and I could not visit her in hospital in Alberton. The reports we received suggested that she might never walk or speak again,” Div recalls.
The family started a prayer group, and many people prayed earnestly for her survival and recovery.
“I had to give consent for brain surgery to relieve the pressure on her brain. She spent approximately four weeks in intensive care before being transferred to Cottesloe Rehabilitation Hospital.”
Throughout those weeks, they continued praying. Relatives also helped adapt Div and Amanda’s home for someone whom they had prepared themselves might live with a disability and need a caregiver.
But God had a different path for Amanda. She made a remarkable recovery.
“Her recovery was slow at first. We had to drive her wherever she needed to go and manage her financial affairs. Today, she is once again an energetic wife and mother, busy every day at SuperChicken and helping care for her 96-year-old mother. Her garden and her home are her happy places,” Div says.
Amanda remembers nothing of the attack or who her attackers were. But she is determined to keep living fully.
As she says in her own words:
“I am not going to hide behind the curtains of my home. I am going to make up for those eight weeks I spent in intensive care and rehabilitation.”
And that is exactly what she is doing.
Almost every day, Amanda finds ways to show kindness to people around her in Nigel. The moment captured in the trending video offers a glimpse of how she lives: with an active faith, a grateful heart and a deep thankfulness to God for His goodness and the gift of life!
Amanda, your pure heart and kindness inspire us all and make the world a much brighter place.
