After a devastating injury and major surgery, Annemé defied the odds and earned her spot to represent South Africa on the world stage.

South Africa (07 August 2025) – When 21-year-old Annemé first stepped into a kickboxing ring seven years ago, she never imagined the sport would one day take her all the way to the international stage. But today, after overcoming a devastating injury, she is preparing to represent South Africa at the Seniors & Masters World Kickboxing Championships in Abu Dhabi this November.

In early 2024, during a national competition, Annemé suffered a severe ACL tear, an injury that was close to ending her athletic career. She underwent knee reconstruction surgery in June and was told to expect at least nine months of no high-impact activity. For a young athlete in peak form, the news was heartbreaking.

What followed was an incredibly tough journey. Testing her both physically and mentally. From needing help just to walk to the bathroom to slowly regaining her strength through physiotherapy and willpower, Annemé chose to fight. And fight she did.

By February 2025, she was officially cleared to return to kickboxing. She did not waste a moment. Within months, she competed in the 2025 South African Kickboxing Championships, earning two silver medals. A testament to her unwavering commitment to the sport she loves.

Now, her comeback story has reached a new milestone. Annemé has been selected to wear the green and gold at the upcoming World Championships in Abu Dhabi, where she will compete against the best in the world. But while her spirit is strong, the financial costs are significant.

From flights and accommodation to competition fees and travel documents, the journey to Abu Dhabi is expensive. That is why her family has launched a BackaBuddy campaign, calling on individuals, companies, and sports lovers alike to support this young athlete in achieving her dream.

Annemé’s story is so much more than just sport. It is about the power of perseverance and what is possible when you refuse to give up. Her journey has already inspired those around her; now, she is ready to inspire the world.
