The Kimberley home cook’s emotional journey ended with the Season 6 crown, a R1 million prize and a historic first for the Northern Cape.
South Africa (19 August 2026) – It was the kind of moment that makes a long competition feel worth every challenge.
After weeks of pressure, setbacks, big wins and plenty of cooking, Andrew “Benjie” Benjamin finally heard the words he had been working towards: he was the winner of MasterChef South Africa Season 6.
The 40-year-old Kimberley home cook not only walked away with the R1 million prize, but also made history as the first contestant from the Northern Cape to claim the MasterChef South Africa title.
A video celebrating his victory takes viewers back through the journey that brought him to that moment, from his early days in the competition to the performances that established him as one of the season’s strongest contenders.
Benjie was one of 20 home cooks who entered the competition, but it did not take long for him to catch the judges’ attention. He claimed his first Dish of the Day in the second episode and went on to collect seven challenge victories before reaching the finale.
One of those wins even earned him a 10-minute advantage for the final cook. Throughout the season, the judges and his fellow contestants affectionately referred to him as “Benjie Baby”, while his cooking continued to demonstrate the creativity and resilience that eventually carried him through to the final.
The finale saw Benjie go head-to-head with Durban finalist Candice Meth in one last high-pressure battle for the title.
But perhaps one of the most memorable moments from the victory video had little to do with the food.

As reality television does so well, Benjie’s family appeared to share in the emotional moment, and the sight of his loved ones cheering him on seemed to catch him off guard.
“You guys are gonna make me break character now,” he joked.
The comments beneath the victory post were filled with congratulatory messages, with viewers celebrating Benjie’s achievement and cheering on the man who had represented the Northern Cape throughout the competition.
From a self-taught home cook in Kimberley to South Africa’s newest MasterChef champion, a historic first for the Northern Cape, Benjie Baby has plenty of reasons to celebrate.
