DJ Darkness, a blind DJ, hopes his story will inspire others to never give up on their dreams, no matter how difficult it may seem, nothing is impossible!
DJ Darkness shared his inspiring story with us in the hopes that it would inspire others to continue following their dreams.
He was born on the 4th of April 1990, premature and one of quintuplets (meaning 5 siblings carried and born on the same day). He weighed only 980 grams and was put in an incubator. Sadly due to high levels of oxygen in the incubator, he lost his sight.
DJ Darkness says his life has been nothing but an adventure!
“From a young age my passion was music. It’s the classic scenario; kid hears music, kid is fascinated, kid gets toy instruments, kid starts building a dream.”
His passion grew on the piano, he did yearly exams and progressed to Grade 7 Jazz piano. He is currently working towards his licentiate. As he grew older he became interested in the music DJs created for radio.
“My love for music only grew as I was inspired by mixes of various DJs I was hearing on the radio. I wanted to be able to weave musical journeys like they did with their DJ mixes. I needed a DJ name however, and thanks to a clever yet ironic suggestion from my brother, DJ Darkness was born.”
“It didn’t stop with DJ’ing however, as the fascination with how music is put together sparked my interest in the art and science of audio production, which encompasses a variety of tasks such as recording, arranging and mixing.”
“Thanks to my mentor, Andre Russouw and the vast knowledge that I gained throughout the years watching him work and record in his studio, I was able to gain the fundamental knowledge necessary to propel myself into the audio world.”
DJ Darkness started composing his own music and working on music production. He now plays gig’s at various festivals, has written a musical score for a short film and even featured his mixes on various radio stations in South Africa and internationally. His mixes have been played on DJ Fresh’s morning show and he also produces for Producer Brad’s parody’s on 94.7fm.
