Charity raise funds to help dog who was stabbed for protecting her owners

Kleintjie loves her humans but lives in an area riddled with gangsterism, often gangsters run through her compound, and once she was even stabbed, now a charity is working to protect her.

Cape Town, South Africa – ‘Giving is Living’ has set up several projects in aid of animals. Their latest is called ‘Movement for Mutts’ which aims to help township dogs become unchained and receive much-needed freedom.

They say that over 80% of dogs living in townships and rural areas across South Africa are chained up because they don’t have adequate fencing.

“They eat, sleep urinate and defecate in an area usually smaller than 1 metre. When speaking to the owners the reasons behind the chaining was often they were fearful of their dogs being stolen and used as bait for dogfighting, being run over by a car, attacking a passerby, getting lost or being hurt by local gangs and kids.”

The charity build fences around the homes where dogs live to give them freedom while still offering safety to the dog. Most pet owners in townships, don’t have the funds to do this themselves, which is why ‘Giving is Living’ have stepped up to help.

Since starting this initiative, they have unchained 11 dogs and have a further 28 to go. They are raising funds for materials to build fences which you can support here if you would like.

This brings us to Kleintjie’s story. The brave dog does everything she can to protect her humans. Living in a gang-ridden area, gangsters often run through the area where she lives. The last time they did so, Kleintjie chased after them and was stabbed.

She was stabbed for protecting her family. Her family decided to chain her up to prevent her from chasing the gangsters. To them, this wasn’t an act of cruelty but an act of desperation to protect her from being stabbed or worse.

Kleintjie’s companion was poisoned shortly after she was stabbed, making the need for a proper fence even greater. Kleintjie lives in a small compound with a community of about 20 people and five other dogs.
