Thousands of vulnerable dogs in shelters across South Africa are now itch-free, tick-free and flea-free, thanks to the incredible #BravectoCares winter drive!

South Africa (08 July 2026) – Bravecto® rolled out its nationwide #BravectoCares campaign this winter, and thousands of dogs have benefited from the drive.

A total of 21,500 doses of tick and flea treatment – worth a whopping R7 million – were donated to animal shelters around the country to help protect our most vulnerable four-legged friends.

Shelter animals tend to battle ticks and fleas more frequently than pets at home do, because of their close living quarters. Parasites can spread quickly from dog to dog, and before long, an entire shelter can be dealing with an infestation.

Left untreated, this affects an already vulnerable dog’s quality of life and may lead to skin problems that put them at greater risk of disease. Ticks and fleas don’t just live on the dogs, either – their eggs settle into bedding, kennels and the surrounding environment, meaning the cycle of reinfestation can keep repeating itself unless it’s properly broken.

That’s where long-lasting protection makes a meaningful difference! Bravecto® Chew offers a single dose that protects dogs from ticks and fleas for a full 12 weeks. For shelters short on time, staff and resources, this means less time spent on repeat treatments and more time spent caring for the animals.

“We see so many animals with skin cases, ticks and fleas, and Bravecto® makes a big difference to the lives of these animals,” shares Dr Leandré van der Merwe, Principal Veterinarian at the Animal Anti-Cruelty League (AACL) in Cape Town, who has seen firsthand the difference a tick and flea treatment can make.

Another wonderful benefit of this winter drive is that when dogs are free from the constant itching and discomfort of parasites, they’re calmer, friendlier and happier. And happier dogs tend to make stronger connections with people who visit shelters looking for their next furry family member – bringing them closer to finding their forever home.

“Building on the success of our previous #BravectoCares drive, we’re excited to once again continue this commitment to improving the lives of pets, especially those most in need,” said Dr Carolyn Chelchinskey, Business Unit Manager for Companion Animals at MSD Animal Health.

All dogs and cats – in shelters and at home – are vulnerable to ticks and fleas, especially those who love adventuring outdoors. A single Bravecto® Chew keeps dogs protected for 12 weeks, while the Bravecto® Spot-On lasts even longer, with 4 months of protection against ticks and 6 months against fleas. For cats, the Spot-On offers 3 months of protection against both fleas and ticks. Find out more here.
