With 19 new Gautrain stations and a 150km expansion in the works, Gauteng’s high-speed rail network is about to transform the way people move – linking more communities, easing congestion, and making travel smoother than ever.
Johannesburg, South Africa (01 March 2017) – Gauteng’s high-speed rail network is about to get a serious glow-up! The Gautrain is expanding, and in true Joburg style, it’s going bigger and better, with 19 new stations and routes that will stretch across the province – including a direct link to Lanseria Airport.
The 80km network we know today, which connects Johannesburg, Pretoria, Ekurhuleni, and OR Tambo International Airport, is set to grow by an additional 150km over the next 20 years, bringing new stations and routes to areas like Fourways and Soweto.
One of the biggest expansions includes a Mamelodi-to-Lanseria route, passing through Sandton, Randburg, Cosmo City and even the Cradle of Humankind. That means more Gauteng residents will have direct access to a high-speed rail system – making travel faster, smoother, and far more convenient.
Another exciting addition is the “blue network”, which will connect Samrand, Olievenhoutbosch, Sunninghill, Fourways, and Soweto. Whether you’re commuting for work, heading to the airport, or just exploring the province, this expansion is set to make Gauteng more connected than ever.

Other areas set to benefit include:
🚆 Mamelodi
🚆 Boksburg
🚆 Randburg-Lanseria
🚆 Mogale City
🚆 Syferfontein
🚆 Roodepoort
🚆 Jabulani
Why Is This a Big Deal?
The feasibility study for this expansion has already been submitted to Provincial and National Treasuries, and all signs point to massive economic and transport benefits. The research shows that if nothing is done, by 2037, Gauteng’s roads will be so congested that cars will be crawling along at an average speed of just 15km/h.
No one has time for that.
By extending the Gautrain network, we’re looking at fewer cars on the road, faster travel times, and a more efficient public transport system that supports economic growth.
Key New Stations and Links Coming Our Way
📍 The Mamelodi–Cosmo City–Samrand–Jabulani route will include stops at Roodepoort, Little Falls, Fourways, Sunninghill, Olievenhoutbosch, Irene, Tshwane East, and Hazeldean.
📍 A new Sandton–Randburg–Cosmo City route is on the cards.
📍 The Rhodesfield–Boksburg link will include a stop at East Rand Mall, with a possible connection to OR Tambo’s Midfield Terminal.
📍 And in one of the most exciting updates – a direct link from Cosmo City to Lanseria Airport is planned.
What’s Next?
The expansion will be rolled out in phases over the next two decades through a public-private partnership. It’s a long-term vision but one that will change the way people move across Gauteng.
For now, the groundwork is being laid (literally and figuratively), and as the project moves forward, more updates will follow.
One thing’s for sure – Gauteng is about to get a whole lot more connected, and that’s a win for everyone!
