Volunteer chaplains André and Jackie Rademeyer answered an emergency call from SAPS and were there to catch the newborn!
Pretoria, South Africa (03 November 2026) – A baby has arrived safely, thanks to two volunteer chaplains who answered an emergency call and helped a mother through labour.
Chaplaincy SA’s EMS Support Unit was called out by Pretoria Hercules SAPS, who needed help for a woman who had gone into labour.
“A mother was in labour, her water had already broken, and there was no time to lose! Our Chaplaincy SA EMS Support Unit responded to the call!” the organisation said.
Chaplaincy SA is a local NGO that trains and coordinates volunteer chaplains to support people in crisis. Its EMS unit assists emergency responders and people affected by traumatic incidents. Most EMS chaplains are volunteers.
André and Jackie Rademeyer were on duty when the call came through. With their help, the baby was delivered safely.
“A very special thank you to André and Jackie Rademeyer who answered the call and had the incredible privilege of catching this precious baby as it entered the world!” the organisation wrote, adding: “One moment, an emergency. The next, the beautiful cry of a newborn baby!”
Chaplaincy SA said the team will not forget the day they witnessed the miracle of life in action, and it extended its best wishes to the mother and her baby.
Chaplains are usually called to the hardest moments in other people’s lives. This time, two of them got to be there for the first moment of a new one. A mother in labour did not have to face it alone, and her baby’s first cry was heard by two genuine helpers. What a way to enter the world!
