This comes as a massive relief, after resources were stretched in Jozi’s most fire-prone, densely populated areas.
Johannesburg, South Africa (6 October 2025) – Joburg has a brand-new Central Fire Station, which officially opened in Marshalltown this week!
The station will bring much faster emergency response in the CBD, in high-risk areas like Hillbrow, Yeoville, Berea, Braamfontein and Newtown.
The station is built to accommodate a new platoon of 50 firefighters who are now able to respond to emergencies quicker and better prepared.
The brand new Central Fire Station comes with support vehicles, nine fire engines ready to roll, a high-rise training tower, a wellness and recreation centre for firefighters, lecture rooms, and a BESAFE Centre, where the public can take part in fire-prevention and life-safety programmes.

The R71 million project was delivered by the Johannesburg Development Agency. It’s a major investment in safety for the inner city. It replaces the old Central Fire Station, a heritage landmark built in the early 1900s, which was shut down in 2018, after more than a 100 years of service, due to safety concerns.
The good news goes even further.
The station will also honour Joburg’s fallen heroes. The names of firefighters who lost their lives in the line of duty will be engraved on the station’s walls so that their courage and sacrifice will always be remembered and honoured.
Every step towards keeping Johannesburg safe is a good one.
