A South African restaurant in Hout Bay is going viral for their amazing water saving efforts during the current droughts.
They are incredibly passionate about food, their clients & South Africa!
They have been featured in the news before for starting a “pay-it-forward” campaign at the beginning of 2015 to make it easier for the Hout Bay community to give back. Massimo’s clients can buy one or more R10 ‘virtual’ slices of pizza and for every 6 slices sold, Massimo’s will deliver an entire pizza to a local charity or institutions.
The list of the beneficiaries changes regularly as they are voted by customer suggestions and just last month, they delivered 47 pizzas to various charities!
Massimo’s have also introduced a community project system where selected foods automatically give a donation to selected charities, so you get to enjoy your favourite meal and give back without any effort.
But Massimo’s also stands for doing what is right for the environment. The pizzeria already gave up all plastic usage at the start of 2018 which included plastic straws, plastic bottles, coffee pods and non biodegradable take away containers and now they are changing the way they do business to help with water saving efforts.
The pizzeria posted a notice 24 hours ago which is going viral for all the right reasons.
To reduce water usage we will only serve:
- Pizza on a wooden board covered with paper
- Water and soft drinks in biodegradable paper cups
- Soft drinks in cans or glass bottles with a biodegradable straw (no cup)
We will no longer be able to bring glasses or jugs to the table, please see the water stations around the restaurant where you can help yourself.
Please consider reusing your glass or cup for your second round.
Thanks for understanding, together we can avoid “day zero”.
The famous quote by Margaret Mead comes to mind in times like this: “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it’s the only thing that ever has.”
