South Africa’s Waterfall City is basking in the international spotlight following the smart city’s win for the ‘Best International Masterplan’ category at the International Property Awards!

Global (24 February 2025) — In big news for South African innovation, South Africa’s Waterfall City is basking in the international spotlight following impressive wins at the International Property Awards.

Held in London, the prestigious awards ceremony saw Waterfall City Management Company walk away with the ‘Best International Masterplan 2024-2025 win’—an award that recognises the innovative, world-class urban design framework making the smart city thrive.

Additionally, the highest international accolade was followed up by Waterfall City being named Best Masterplan Africa 2024-2025.

Though Waterfall City already has five Best International Mixed-use Development awards to its name, this was the very first time the smart city entered the Masterplan category. Specifically created last year by the International Property Awards association for large-scale developments covering a minimum of 20,000m2, the category saw formidable competitions clamouring to claim the World’s Best spot.

Over the past year, an independent panel of over 100 industry experts studied and assessed hundreds of entries before determining the winners. In the Masterplan category, candidates were judged based on criteria that ranged from design and land use to architecture and sustainability.

“The fact that Waterfall City has been chosen as the very Best in the World winner of the International Property Awards’ new Masterplan category, is a huge honour,” CEO of Waterfall City Management Company Willie Vos reflected.

“As Africa continues to attract interest as an emerging economic investment hub, we are proud to be playing a role in representing the continent on a global stage, showcasing local talent and ability. Such international recognition not only emphasises the innovation excellence that has gone into planning the growth of this smart city, but is also a reward for all the hard work that my team, along with our partners and stakeholders, continue to put into this development—work and dedication that I am so proud of.”
