In partnership with grassroots organisation ‘Rock Girl’, Uber in South Africa will assist with transporting girls in Cape Town by offering 2 months of free rides!
100 Resilient Cities – Pioneered by The Rockefeller Foundation (100RC) today announced a partnership brokered between grassroots organisation Rock Girl and Uber in South Africa to facilitate transportation to girls and women in Cape Town.
100RC helps cities around the world become more resilient to social, economic, and physical challenges that are a growing part of the 21st century.
The partnership began as a result of the “Resilience Agenda Workshop” held by the City of Cape Town and 100RC on 19 May 2017. The Workshop was a critical step for the City’s process of developing a comprehensive citywide Resilience Strategy, and brought stakeholders across city government and from the private sector, non-profits, NGOs and civic groups into the planning process.
As one of the stakeholder groups present, Rock Girl reiterated the need for transport as one of Cape Town’s resilience priorities. 100RC connected Rock Girl with Uber in South Africa, resulting in the creation of a number of promotional codes that Rock Girl has begun using to transport participants in their programs.
Uber’s terms explicitly state that anyone under 18 must be accompanied by an adult to ride with Uber, and therefore the girls who are underage will be accompanied by a chaperone.
“Thanks to Uber and 100 Resilient Cities, these girls are able to focus on becoming ethical, effective leaders who can shape the direction of our country,” says Michelle India Baird, Founder of Rock Girl.
“Uber is always looking at new and innovative ways that people can benefit from the convenient, reliable and affordable option of getting around their cities. If this platform can be used to develop the young woman of South Africa, we are privileged to partner with Rock Girl,” says Alon Lits, General Manager, Uber Sub-Saharan Africa.
“Safe and reliable transport is a top concern for Cape Town’s resilience efforts, affecting interconnected challenges such as social cohesion and access to employment,” says Bryna Lipper, Chief Resilience Advisor and Senior VP at 100 Resilient Cities. “A resilient city is safe for all residents and we are pleased that this partnership with Uber opens new possibilities of mobility for young women and girls participating in Rock Girl’s leadership programmes.”
“Thank you to 100RC for facilitating this relationship between Uber and Rock Girl,” says Gareth Morgan, the Deputy Chief Resilience Officer of Cape Town. “Through partnerships Cape Town and its people become stronger, and this partnership will allow the good work of Rock Girl to increase in strength.”
