Sakhile Mogowane turned an opportunity into a thriving business; today, she is a successful entrepreneur boosting her rural economy and offering essential mining services.
South Africa (25 August 2022) – Sakhile Mogowane started FemiPower Supply to assist the mining sector with their testing. Thanks to investment into her skills and business, she is now one of the growing female-owned and run businesses offering an essential service to the sector. Not only is she the entrepreneur behind the venture, but she is also the driver, sample collector, marketer, finance manager and administrator.
Glencore established the Steelpoort Entrepreneurship Hub to invest in businesses offering essential services within the mining sector. Mining communities in South Africa are primarily rural, historically disadvantaged and vastly under-resourced. However, there are people within these areas that have the skills and innovation to do so much more.
Glencore’s focus on business incubation has been a massive opportunity for Sakhile. Her small business was provided with access to services and training that assisted her in growing both its financial and operational capacity. FemiPower Supply went on to become part of the supply chain and assists with testing plant samples from the Glencore Lion smelter.
Sakhile participated in the SMME training programme on finance, marketing, and business management. Through the hub, she was assigned a technical mentor to help her and has benefited significantly.
The substantial growth in her business has improved her quality of life, her ability to pay school fees and look after her children, and most importantly, buy new assets for the business to allow it to grow and succeed further.
Her story is one of many that are coming out of the Steelpoort Entrepreneurship Hub. Now Sakhile is able to contribute to the local economy of her rural area, thus boosting those around her too.
