South Africa (13 August 2020) – Civil society organisations are standing together and calling for a nationwide weekend of action against COVID-19 corruption.

Just four months after the state of emergency was declared in the country, the government has been hit by several massive allegations of fraud, corruption, and nepotism with the emergency funds that were meant to keep citizens fed, safe and healthy.
According to the Sunday Times, the most significant area targeted by the greedy fraudsters is Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). Contracts to distribute items such as masks, gloves, and medical visors have been abused to high heaven, with those behind the deals jacking up the prices and helping themselves to a slice of the pie.
The president announced that this ‘COVID corruption’ would be thoroughly investigated, and the early signs point to a feeding frenzy that shames South Africa:
- At least 90 businesses are suspected of setting up corrupt contracts with the health department.
- One deal is said to be worth around R125m. relating to PPE procurement in Gauteng.
- In total, the estimated costs of corruption so far has sailed above R2.2 billion – a figure that’s likely to soar.
- Ramaphosa has also warned that ‘fake charities, food parcel abuse and fraudulent UIF claims’ are also on his radar.
Many civil society organisations are calling for action against COVID-19 corruption.
They include the South African Council of Churches, Ahmed Kathrada Foundation, the Desmond and Leah Tutu Legacy Foundation, the Nelson Mandela Foundation, the Foundation for Human Rights, and the Council for the Advancement of the South African Constitution.
“We will be calling for a nationwide weekend of action from 21-23 August against Covid-19 corruption. 21 August will be declared a national ‘Day of Action’. The launch of this campaign will kickstart a series of monthly activities against Covid-19 corruption, culminating on 9 December, marked as International Anti-Corruption Day.”
