What was meant to be a sign to apologise to the kids in the neighbourhood, became a drop-off point for beautiful kindness… and then something even more magical happened.
Georgia, United States of America (02 November) – Courtney Thomas – a mother of a little brave cancer fighter – has had her faith in humanity restored, after she witnessed what kids did for her family on Halloween night.
Thomas’ 3-year-old daughter Zoe Thomas has been fighting leukaemia since February this year. It has been an incredibly taxing time for the family, but they have somehow held it together.
“We are now 9 months into therapy and approximately one month away from maintenance therapy. We still feel like we’re processing the fact our daughter has cancer. Most days, it feels like we are still just in survival mode. This last phase has really brought a lot of the emotions and realities to the surface. Watching your silly, sassy 3-year-old feel so terrible that she only wants to stay in bed or lay in your lap all day as you rub her head while the rest of her hair falls out is heartwrenching; there’s no denying your child has cancer at that point.”
Thomas says that the family have also had many joyful, happy days as well.
“I’m learning that God blesses us with what I have named ‘refill weeks’ in which Zoe is feeling great, and we can enjoy laughing and playing, being so thankful for all to be home together. God uses these times to ‘fill our tanks’ back up to help us get through the next hard stage.”
Unfortunately, Halloween was not one of these “refill weeks”, and the family decided that they would skip the festivities and stay indoors. They also decided to put a sign up, letting neighbours know that they would not be participating in handing out candy.
“I can’t stop crying. If anyone thought there was no hope in our kids and teens, you’re wrong.
The SOLE purpose of us putting this sign in our yard today was so kids wouldn’t run to our door and be disappointed (our neighbourhood usually gets 300-400 kids).”
Thomas looked on their doorbell camera and noticed that kids had been stopping at the sign, so she and her husband T.J. ventured outside to see what was happening.

The brave mom had sent out a message on social media thanking everyone for restoring her faith in humanity, but a bigger miracle was at play… social media users found her crowdfunding campaign that she had started in September to help pay for the medical bills and funds starting rolling in.
Within a couple of hours, her target had been reached and doubled by people who had heard about their story.
“Thank you to everyone for your kind words and prayers! We serve a mighty and faithful God, and we hold tight to the promise of Romans 8:28 – And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.
Childhood cancer is something we wish no family ever had to endure, but there is so much love, hope, and support!”
