It’s hard to believe that the big, beautiful girl we see today was once a fragile, injured albino elephant calf caught in a snare. Now, Khanyisa is thriving and celebrating a major milestone: six years since her rescue!
Hoedspruit, South Africa (08 January 2025) – If you’ve been a long-time Good Things Guy reader, you’ll likely have read about Khanyisa, an albino elephant orphan that was caught in a snare as a calf back in 2020.
Her wounds indicated that she had been trying desperately to free herself for a few days, resulting in severe lacerations across her neck and cheeks, and the top of her right ear was cut.
Requiring urgent care, patience and love, Khanyisa was thankfully rescued and taken to the Hoedspruit Elephant Rehabilitation and Development (HERD) elephant orphanage to recover.
Khanyisa was around four months old at the time and has since grown in leaps and bounds to become a strong and confident elephant who is part of a herd.
This week, she celebrates six incredible years since her rescue!
“Khanyisa grew up surrounded by a herd of her own who taught her how to be an elephant, and carers who walked beside her through every stage of her journey. Today, she stands as part of a herd. Confident, curious and deeply connected, exactly where she belongs,” HERD shares.
As the organisation celebrates six years since her rescue, it also honours the commitment that made it possible – the commitment that nursed her back to good health, bottle-fed her, took her on slow walks and showered her with care.
A video featuring a montage of clips taken over the years, shows Khanyisa’s inspiring growth and milestones, a testament to the care that has been poured into this loveable trunked beauty.
Khanyisa’s story is a reminder that healing takes time, consistency and compassion, and that none of it happens alone.
“This is only one chapter of Khanyisa’s life. She still has so much ahead of her. More learning, more adventures, more moments of joy within her herd.
“We cannot wait to see what the next few years hold for this remarkable young elephant, and to continue walking alongside her as her story unfolds,” HERD said.
Happy 6th rescue-versary, Khanyisa! Your quiet strength and remarkable journey have been inspiring to witness and experience.
