The pup has beaten the odds and has something so special and remarkable about him; besides his will to live, the fact that he sacrificed his own life to try to protect his owner is bravery like we have never seen.
Western Cape, South Africa (15 March 2022) – It’s been 24 days since Luke was found stabbed, beaten and left for dead, but the pup that heroically tried to protect his human during a tragic fight by jumping between the knives and gunshots is on the road to recovery… because of love!
Dead Animal Walking (DAW) a registered non-profit organisation that gives all badly abused and neglected animals on the verge of death a second chance at life, posted an update about the brave pup.
In late February, Luke put himself in front of his dad to protect him from bullets and pangas in a tragic fight that broke out in Mooreesburg – a rural town situated about 90 kilometres north of Cape Town.
The brave pup tragically lost his dad, but kind South Africans working for the incredible animal organisation stepped in to help Luke, who had multiple stab wounds, as well as severe damage from being beaten with a spade.
“Our precious miracle boy is still in hospital, and it’s been 24 days so far. Luke is responding well to the surgeries but mostly to the love, affection and adoration as well as figuring out that three legs ain’t that bad!”
He is happy again, there’s a sparkle in his eye, and he is hopeful. Luke has become Moorreesburg’s local hero, and the team know that they made the right choice to give him a second chance in life.
The brave pup has been in hospital for so long now because he had some minor complications, and he still needs to remain in high care to make sure he heals completely.
“I have been working alongside Richelle and the Dead Animals Walking team since December 2020; their passion for animals is contagious! I took Luke in after-hours, and despite the mental and physical trauma he has been through, he has been a fantastic patient from the moment I met him. Luke tolerates all our treatments, he never flinches, and his tail always wags. He represents everything I love about Pitbulls! Thank you DAW, for rescuing him and trusting us to treat him,” Dr Rouxlene Sheridan explains.
“Calm, patient, loving… these are just some of the words I would use to describe Luke. Despite having to endure one of the worst injuries that I’ve seen to date, as well as a painstaking 3-hour limb amputation procedure, Luke only has gratitude and excessive tail wagging to offer. Luke is proof of the tenacity and big-heartedness that is a Pitbull Terrier,” Dr Dylan Carulei says about Luke.
Meanwhile, the Dead Animals Walking team would really just like to thank every single person for reading, sharing or donating towards Luke’s road to recovery.
