The Owl Rescue Centre is dedicated to saving owls and now they are adding bees to the list as well. Last year they started recycling to build shelters for owls and now they are building bee-hives too.

This time last year the Owl Rescue Centre made the announcement that they would be collecting plastic from the ocean and donors to start building Owl boxes.

Now they are bringing a second structure into their plans… Bee conservation houses. These houses will be built from recycled bottles which are converted into planks and used just like wood would be.

“Our Bee Conservation Houses are made from the Ocean plastic we collect. We will be collecting enough waste plastic to make around 5000 of them this year. Hopefully, they make a difference.

We install them high up in big trees where no one can get to them”

The whole idea of collecting plastic and turning it into nesting boxes started while the staff were discussing plastic in the oceans. They wanted to make sure that more plastic was recycled, that way less would end up in the ocean. Not only are they successfully making nesting boxes now they are also making bat houses and bee hotels.

All these housing units are available to the public for purchase to place in private gardens. These units are also installed in areas that owls are present to offer better housing for them, preventing them from attempting to nest in areas where humans could disturb them.

The rescue centre needs donations of recyclable plastic. They are wanting milk bottles, cooldrink and water bottles for their new project.

You can contact the Owl Rescue Centre to arrange to drop-off your plastic bottles on their Facebook page here. The organisation estimates that these new homes could last up to 400 years.
