The World Wildlife Fund says black rhinos are critically endangered, with only about 5,500 left.
Undisclosed Location, Kenya (23 May 2022) – There are only around 5,500 black rhinos in the wild, an increase from less than 2,500 around 25 years ago, and this sanctuary in Kenya is making a massive difference in the repopulation of Africa’s “chubby unicorns”.
Rhinos are making a comeback at one particular sanctuary in Africa. In less than ten years, the Sera Community Rhino Sanctuary is boasting a near-doubling of its black rhino population.
Located in Sera, in the wild, undiscovered, northern frontier of Kenya, this is the first community-owned and community-run Rhino Sanctuary in the country… and after an absence of over a quarter of a century with no Rhinos, this news marks a historical achievement for conservation globally.
The sanctuary took in 10 black rhinos in 2015 and announced the population has grown to 19, and that’s not counting the present rhino calves.
