Firefighters and emergency crews demonstrated extraordinary courage in containing a blaze on Cape Town’s Table Mountain, while swift action by law enforcement led to the arrest of a suspect now charged with arson.
Western Cape, South Africa (31 December 2024) – Cape Town’s beloved Table Mountain has been the stage for an extraordinary display of bravery as firefighters and volunteers joined forces to contain a blaze that threatened its iconic slopes.
The fire, which erupted around Platteklip Gorge in Table Mountain National Park, was met with a rapid and fearless response from the firefighting teams of SANParks, City of Cape Town officials, and the dedicated Volunteer Wildfire Services (VWS).
Thanks to their relentless efforts, the fire has been largely contained, with no significant damage to property and no injuries reported, apart from a firefighter who suffered a fall but is recovering well after being airlifted to safety. Approximately nine hectares of land were scorched, but the unwavering courage of the teams ensured it did not spread further.
Firefighters worked tirelessly through the night, battling flare-ups and navigating challenging terrain. The coordinated efforts of SANParks, Provincial Disaster Management Centre, and Working on Fire crews were nothing short of inspiring. On the ground, critical medical care was provided to the injured firefighter, while aerial support teams stood ready to assist if needed.
The passion and purpose driving these brave men and women shone through as they put their lives on the line to protect one of South Africa’s most cherished landmarks.
SANParks expressed deep gratitude, stating: “We thank the public for their cooperation during this time.”
The VWS volunteers, fuelled by a deep love for what they do, were instrumental in assisting SANParks and other agencies. Their efforts highlighted the power of community-driven action, supported entirely by donations from individuals and corporates who believe in preserving South Africa’s natural heritage.
Reflecting on the dangerous circumstances, they shared: “Why do we do what we do? Because we LOVE it! This work is fueled by passion, purpose, and a deep commitment to protecting our communities and natural heritage.”
In a significant development, a suspect has been detained and charged with arson in connection with the fire. They are expected to appear in court, bringing a sense of relief and justice to this harrowing situation.
While the immediate danger has passed, the Western Cape is entering another challenging fire season. Organisations like the VWS need our support to continue their vital work.
