City of Cape Town Trials Innovative Food Waste Project!

The public has the opportunity to participate in the City of Cape Town’s pilot project aimed at diverting organic food waste from landfills and to assess whether this has the potential for further rollout.

 

Western Cape, South Africa (08 April 2021) – The City of Cape Town acknowledges that South Africa faces significant challenges relating to food loss and waste, with an estimated 12.6 million tonnes of food wasted in the country per year.

The national and provincial government have responded to these challenges by setting a provincial target of 50% diversion of organic waste from landfill by 2022 and 100% diversion by 2027.

“In order to meet these targets, the City is already diverting a significant proportion of organic waste from landfill, through, for example, the garden waste chipping programme at City drop-offs as well as the home composting container programme, which has rolled out home composters to over 22,000 households already.

“The City continues to investigate various methods for residents to divert their own food waste. This will help the City understand the most convenient, efficient and cost-effective service to offer residents in future, to ensure food waste is diverted from landfill,” said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Water and Waste, Alderman Xanthea Limberg.

One such trial is the current food waste diversion project operating from four City drop-off sites and four additional pop-up sites that have been created in various Central Business Districts in Cape Town, including the City Centre, Claremont, Durbanville and Somerset West.

What residents should know about the trial project:

  • Participants are issued with a 5L bucket (with an explanatory leaflet), which they take home to fill with their food waste, temporarily storing it in the fridge.
  • When the bucket is full, they are then required to return it to their designated site at which they received the bucket.
  • The bucket will be decanted, cleaned and reissued to the participant.
  • The project kicked off on 15 February and will be running until 30 June 2021.
  • The trial is limited to 200 residential participants per site and is taking place at the eight sites identified below.
  • The City drop-offs are established sites already visited by residents to drop off recyclables, garden waste or garage waste and the CBD sites were chosen as convenient drop-off points for residents working in or frequenting these areas.

Acceptable organic waste to put into your bucket:

  • Fruit and vegetable scraps and peels
  • Eggshells, egg trays and tea bags
  • All food scraps such as starch (rice, pasta, pap), sauce, meat, bones
  • Paper plates and serviettes
  • Compostable food containers

  • Somerset West Cnr of Drama and Caledon Street Thursdays 10:00 – 14:00

The City will be looking at the participation rate, as well as the tonnage of food waste diverted in this manner, to assess whether this has the potential for further rollout.

“We encourage the public to participate in this trial. The food waste that is collected at the sites will be taken to a City solid waste facility where it will be weighed and composted.

Ideally, it is preferable to avoid food waste altogether, and therefore, we would like to encourage and remind residents to reduce food scraps by planning their meals and refrigerating any leftovers to eat the next day or sharing them with someone else.

If you still have food waste to dispose of, then make your way to your nearest pop-up style CBD location or listed City drop-off site, register and participate in this great trial initiative while the buckets are still available,” said Alderman Limberg.
