After a few close calls and gasps, there was an audible sigh of relief as the Egyptian Geese family with newly hatched goslings made it safely to the other side!
Johannesburg, South Africa (27 February 2022) – A couple stopped on the side of a highway to save an Egyptian Geese family trying desperately to cross the busy road.
The South African Wildlife Rehabilitation Center (SAWRC) shared the story and video on their Facebook page.
SAWRC was founded by Judy Davidson and Ken Pollard in 2004 and was known back then as Wildlife in Crisis. Judy now manages the centre. The passionate South African has been rehabilitating indigenous wildlife since 1975 and has won numerous awards for her dedication. Judy has worked extensively in the nature conservation arena and has a vast knowledge of the wildlife that is taken into the clinic.
This morning, SAWRC received a frantic call from Deirdre Botha and Greg Whittaker, who were travelling along the N12 near the Benoni lake area.
They had seen a family of Egyptian Geese trying desperately to cross over the highway to get to the water on the other side. Diedre and Greg quickly exited at the next off-ramp and doubled back to the Geese. Deidre began waving down traffic, trying to get motorists to slow down and become aware of the little family.
“After a few close calls and gasps, which echoed down the phone as we chatted, there was an audible sigh of relief as the family with newly hatched goslings made it safely to the other side! Diedre and Greg… you guys are absolute legends for what you’ve managed to accomplish this morning! Thank you. Definitely not an easy task, and you’ve pulled it off perfectly! Well Done!!! A family saved.” – SAWRC.
