A group of elephants has rushed in to rescue a young herd member when a crocodile clamped on its trunk and wouldn’t let go.

Just like in Rudyard Kipling’s classic short story, The Elephant’s Child, a Crocodile attached itself to an Elephant’s trunk in real life.

“Once upon a time there was a herd of elephants… then one day an adult elephant came, it also came to get a drink. Then a crocodile rose up from the muddy water and grabbed its nose and pulled and pulled then suddenly the crocodile let go of the elephants nose.”

The crazy moment was caught on video where a herd of elephants can be seen slowly making their way across a river when the front of the group slows to a stop. Suddenly, a crocodile jumps out of the water and bites down onto the trunk of a medium-sized elephant. The elephants roar but the crocodile refuses to let go.

The herd were drinking from a river in Liwonde National Park in Malawi when the reptile snapped at a the elephant’s nose. The mammal roared and reared back, dragging the croc onto land as it did so.

The herd initially step back in alarm before rushing back in to save the troubled elephant.

Tourists filming the attack can be heard gasping in shock as the reptile clings onto the elephant’s trunk.

The video was filmed on Monday by Alexander Makanga, a Malawi-born biomedical scientist now living in the UK. Makanga watched the confronting and breathtaking exchange while on a boat safari.

His stunning footage has been seen more than 100,000 times online in just a few days.
