A kind-hearted woman took a motionless chameleon off her gate with the goal of taking it to CROW; little did she know, she had just helped this mom safely birth six little babies.

Durban, South Africa (07 May 2024) – The CROW Centre for Rehabilitation of Wildlife shared how saving a single chameleon turned into saving seven lives! They shared the happy news on Facebook and supporters were so happy to hear!

CROW is Durban’s only registered and fully permitted wildlife rehabilitation centre providing indigenous wildlife with a second chance at a free, safe, and sustainable life in the wild. They also work with Threatened or Protected Species (TOPS) Terrestrial and Marine species.

The Centre works with all indigenous mammal species, reptile species, and bird species. Some of the animals they have cared for on the property include TOPs Nile crocodile, blue duiker, and Blesbok, as well as grey duiker, genet, scrub hare, rock hyrax, banded mongoose, water mongoose, spotted eagle owl, wood owl, spurwing goose, Egyptian geese, egret, terrapin, garden variety birds, bush baby, vervet monkeys, leopard tortoise, eastern hinge tortoise, labots tortoise and specs tortoise.

Recently a community member brought in a chameleon that had initially shown signs of being unwell. The chameleon was motionless on her gate, so she took it inside to place in a safe space with the goal of getting the chameleon to CROW. Never could she have imagined that she would be placing the chameleon in a safe space to give birth.

“What an incredible rescue story! A kind-hearted member of our community found a chameleon sitting on her security gate, seemingly motionless. Without hesitation, she provided warmth, shelter, and food.”

“Little did she know, this chameleon mama was actually in labour! The black headed dwarf chameleon gives birth to live young and a little while later she welcomed six adorable baby chameleons into the world. 🌟🐣

Now, this amazing family is safe and sound at our centre, where they will receive the care they need before being released back into the wild where they belong. Thank you to everyone involved in this heartwarming rescue!”

All seven of the chameleons are now at CROW and when they are ready, they will be released somewhere beautiful and safe.
