The Elephants have walked over 500 kilometres… the longest migration on record in China!
Kunming, China (23 June 2021) – A herd of elephants was spotted taking a snooze in the outskirts of Kunming, China, as they stopped for a rest after a record 500-kilometre trek from their forest home.
The South China Morning Post reported that it has been months since a herd of 15, originally 17, elephants left their home in the Mengyangzi Nature Reserve in Xishuangbanna, southern Yunnan province, trekking 500km north in search for a new habitat, and a week since they entered the outskirts of the provincial capital Kunming.
“Roads have been blocked using lorries while 18 tons of pineapples and corn have been scattered in an attempt to lead the elephants away from the city’s Jinning district.”
Apparently, hundreds of tourists have been trekking the journey with them.
Globalink posteed a video of the herd having a nap after what is being called “the longest migration on record in China”.
