An Elephant herd assisted a distressed mother and her young calf while crossing a rain-swollen river.
A deep river is never easy for elephant adults, let alone a six month old calf, to cross and being washed away in the current is a very real possibility.
While attempting to cross the Ewaso Nyiro river with his herd, the six-month-old started to struggle and was caught in the current, only to be saved by his fleet-footed mother.
YouTube uploader Sandy Gelderman told Storyful, “It had been raining, so the river was flowing fast. Our hearts were in our throats while we watched, since the current was so strong, and we could see there was no other place for the baby to cross. We were relieved when the baby was rescued.”
On Youtube, Gelderman writes, “They say elephants can remember, well this little calf will remember this advanced swimming lesson for the rest of its life, as will Sandy.”
