Her mom had to be humanely euthanised after sustaining terrible injuries, but Freya bounced back thanks to the best care!
Boksburg, South Africa (04 September 2025) –The Boksburg SPCA received a heartbreaking call one late evening in mid-July, notifying them that a horse had been knocked down on the busy Barry Marais Rd nearby.
Sadly, the impact had left her with broken legs and the only option to ease her pain was to humanely euthanise her. The whole situation could have been avoided if her irresponsible owner had ensured his mare and foal were properly padlocked.
In a field not far away from where her mom was found, was the young chestnut filly of approximately 7 months old, alone, afraid and panicked. The Boksburg SPCA scooped her up in their horsebox and brought her in to safety.
There she stayed, for almost two months, winning the affections of her rescuers. Horses aren’t easy work. They eat a lot, need companionship from fellow horsies, and deserve loads of space to run free, as horsies should. <
And so started the SPCA’s plight to find her a new home.
Just last week, their mission reached a happy ending when the Pritchard family adopted Freya and welcomed her with loving and open arms.
It took a little coaxing at first. She had made friends at the Boksburg SPCA and had become somewhat of a resident gardener, who, upon her exit, insisted the Primula’s needed pruning first…
Hours later, more gentle coaxing and some webbing around her rump eventually got her into her horsebox and onto greener pastures.
Now, she’s found pure happiness at her new home.
“Luna [is] loving the freedom! [A] space where she can run and be a horse. She is now a much loved family member,” the Boksburg SPCA wrote, in the comments of their post, accompanying a video of Freya galloping free!
