Funda Nenja, an animal welfare organisation in Mpophomeni, is softening hearts and transforming minds about animal welfare. Through education and community outreach, they’re teaching people that kindness to animals makes for a better world for all of us.
Mpophomeni, South Africa (18 December 2024) – Many South African townships still grapple with deeply inherited negative attitudes towards animals, often characterised by neglect and mistreatment.
A lot of learning and unlearning still needs to take place, and in the humble town of Mpophomeni in Umgungundlovu, the non-governmental organisation Funda Nenja has made great strides in changing the attitude and shifting the view that dogs are just mere animals undeserving love.
Through its One Welfare initiative, volunteers have gone into the community interacting and educating people on how dogs should be treated.
These outreach efforts have also opened community members’ eyes to the value pets offer not only in terms of security but also in companionship, bringing immense joy to their lives and making these fur babies truly deserve our affection and care.
“Funda Nenja is proud of how our holistic welfare approach has transformed the Mpophomeni community’s attitude and behaviour towards dogs, other animals and people in general.
“Many dogs are now more valued and considered family companions, while cruelty and neglect are far less common occurrences. Kindness to animals makes for a better world for all of us,” the organisation said.
Dogs enrich our lives in countless ways and deserve to be cherished as beloved companions. And for those who haven’t fully tapped into this understanding, Funda Nenja is doing exemplary work in softening hard hearts (or those who simply don’t know any better) to realise the treasure of having a furry friend!
