The wait is almost over for the wagging tails of Mpophomeni as Funda Nenja gets ready to open its gates for a brand-new year of learning, healing, and community canine care.

Mpophomeni, South Africa (13 January 2026) – Funda Nenja’s dog school, clinic and pop-up shop is gearing up to reopen and serve the community of Mpophomeni from this week Friday for the first term of 2026.

Volunteers, staff and a team of community assistants have been working on policies and plans in preparation for another year of opportunities in making a difference to the lives of people and their companion animals.

“When Funda Nenja reopens on Friday afternoon we anticipate a large number of Mpophomeni residents bringing their dogs to our primary veterinary care clinic as this service has been unavailable over the festive season break,” Funda Nenja said.

Run by the skilled Dr Dani, the weekly clinic attends to an average of 50 dogs from the local community every Friday. Here, free services such as rabies vaccinations are given while deworming, parasite control and the 5-in-1 vaccine is also available.

“In addition, minor ailments are also treated. More serious cases are taken for treatment to Midlands Veterinary Hospital who generously give us discounted rates and some cases are referred to the uMngeni SPCA clinic.”

Judging by the long lines and eager faces that come through every Friday, it goes without saying that the Funda Nenja clinic has played a big role in improving the quality of life for Mpophomeni dogs as it is the only service provider in the township.

“Without this facility many dogs would suffer or die due to a lack of ready access to veterinary care.”

Funda Nenja currently operates its makeshift clinic from the change room of the Mpophomeni Sports Stadium. The team’s hope and dream is to one day have its own building with proper facilities to better support the township animals.

Healthy dogs contribute to a healthy community and the general wellbeing of all. Funda Nenja is excited to teach youngsters humane dog handling skills and how to responsibly care for their four-legged companions. Along the way, staff also instil patience and kindness, nurturing the understanding that animals are sentient beings – all of which helps create a more compassionate world.
