What began in July 2009 as a humble school holiday project with a single dog training class in the township of Mpophomeni has, over 16 years, evolved into an internationally recognised organisation that inspires children to learn and lovingly connect with their pets.
Mpophomeni, South Africa (02 July) – July marks the anniversary month of Funda Nenja: the educational animal welfare charity doing incredible work to foster strong bonds and proper care for dogs and pets in the township of Mpophomeni.
What started as a mid-year school holiday project in July of 2009 has evolved into an internationally recognised organisation.
“At that stage, we were still under the umbrella of uMngeni SPCA and had not thought of becoming an independent NPO. None of us at that early stage of the initiative dreamed that we would be where we are today,” shared Heather Somerville, Funda Nenja’s co-founder.
It all started with a dog training class
Adrienne Olivier from the uMngeni SPCA had discussed the idea of starting dog training classes in underprivileged areas. This led to the first dog training class in Mpophomeni, where Education Officer Zodwa Maphanga, along with a group of enthusiastic volunteers, a trained AfriCanis dog, doggy treats and a huge dose of enthusiasm, were met with only one lame dog waiting for his first lesson.
“However, the word soon spread and more and more recruits gradually joined the group until, within half an hour, we had a lovely group of twelve dogs, of every description, and their eager young owners ready to discover the world of interspecies communication.”
The children were guided on what to do with instructions translated into Zulu for them to understand.
“How these kids were able to work it all out, I don’t know, but they did with great enthusiasm, and by the time we had spent an hour with them, the dogs were walking to heel and sitting on command – well, most of the time!
“Did they want to come again next Friday? A resounding ‘Yebo’,” Heather reflected.

16 years later
Today, Funda Nenja operates as a One Welfare organisation, boasting six staff members and 25 volunteers, implementing various programs that uplift both the community of eMpophomeni and their beloved animals.
Through its holistic approach to animal welfare, Funda Nenja has helped young minds gain and absorb education on animal welfare and basic nutrition, which has, in turn, been passed onto families and friends, allowing dogs to experience gentler, kinder methods of handling.
The charity’s humble beginnings have seen dedicated trainers give up their time to instil practical animal welfare education, where it has proven to be truly effective.
“Thanks to all our many supporters and donors, past and present, who have contributed in some way and made this incredible journey possible.
“We plan to be a visible and accessible presence for many more years and, with continued support, we will together make a difference in ever-increasing ways,” Heather added.
