Fate intervened when German rapper Kay Wagner happened to be visiting a wildlife sanctuary in Limpopo at the same time that an injured donkey managed to drag itself there. Kay not only arranged immediate veterinary care for the poor guy but also raised funds to make sure he found a new home at the Karoo Donkey Sanctuary.
Limpopo, South Africa (03 February 2025) – A donkey, now known as Bahati, has found a new lease on life after a rough ordeal in the wild. Suffering injuries that local vets believed to be from a wildebeest encounter, Bahati seemingly dragged himself from one of the neighbouring settlements onto the Hakuna Mipaka Oasis Wildlife Sanctuary in Limpopo.
This sanctuary is Dean Schneider’s passion project, also known as “The Lion Man”. By a stroke of luck, one of Dean’s work associates, German rapper Kay Wagner (aka Pikayzo), was working at the sanctuary when he saw Bahati, clearly in need of help.
Kay was so drawn to Bahati that he immediately arranged for veterinary care and for Bahati to be brought in from the wild.
Kay, known for his amazing advocacy for animal rights, also negotiated Bahati’s surrender by his former owner as he was no longer of any use given his injuries.
He then reached out to Karoo Donkey Sanctuary in early January after seeing one of their videos of a herd of over 100 donkeys heading out to pasture. He asked if the sanctuary would consider taking Bahati in.
However, due to financial constraints, the Karoo Donkey Sanctuary had been closed to new intakes for the past year, making Kay’s request a difficult one to fulfil.
Refusing to give up, Kay launched a successful fundraising campaign among his fans in Germany. Thanks to his tireless efforts, the Karoo Donkey Sanctuary has agreed to welcome Bahati, and he will be transported to his new, peaceful home today!
Bahati means “luck and good fortune” in Swahili, and it best captures this little guy’s journey unfolded thanks to a lucky encounter with his real-life guardian angel, Kay, who went above and beyond to ensure he gets the peaceful life he truly deserves.
