Elephant Protection

An all female expedition for Elephant Protection took 100 days from South Africa to Kenya. The woman worked with 37 organisations along the way.

Carla Geyser headed the expedition to Kenya, with an all female crew. The expedition took them over 15 787km through 10 countries in a 100 day period. It was called the Elephant Ignite Expedition – women for wildlife.

The expedition took the ladies to 37 organisations all fighting for the protection of the African Elephants. Each of the woman on the expedition paid for the trip with their own private funding so that all the money raised went directly to the various Elephant Protection funds.

The expedition funded the collaring of an elephant, the cost of collaring one elephant is around $5,000.00. The elephants have been showing new patterns of travel and have been crossing over to private land owned by a mine. The data collected from the donated collar will help with understanding why the elephants are breaking into a local mine.

“Collaring elephants is an important tool in understanding their behaviour, but it’s no easy task! Immobilising such large creatures is a tricky process requiring a powerful cocktail of potentially lethal drugs, a dedicated team of professionals and a whole lot of muscle!”

Each of the ladies on the trip was able to help in the process of collaring the elephant as well as collecting DNA and other samples for scientific research.

The ladies also handed out over 20,000 educational booklets to bring awareness to the declining number of elephants.

” We  handed out 20 000 educational booklets to the future custodians of our planet  ….the children.”

Earth Touch posted a short documentary about the collaring of the elephant with the Ignite Expedition donated collar.
