Once an eyesore and hazard, a former illegal dumping site has become a treasure for people in the Eastern Cape as a community park!
Kariega, South Africa (28 August 2023) — A spot that once stood as an illegal dumping site and eyesore in the Eastern Cape’s Kariega has now turned a new chapter; exchanging disheartened looks for hopeful ones as a clean community park!
With new trees, benches and play areas for the community members of Liberty Park and their children, it now stands as a green flag of joy, and a much-needed public treasure.
The big handover took place on Friday where the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality welcomed the public to witness that with effort, even the biggest community headaches (like an illegal dumping site) can take on new, beautiful chapters.
“It gives us great pleasure that we can deliver on service delivery needs of communities. For years this spot was used as an illegal dumping site, the NMBM has now transformed it into a beautiful recreational space where children and elders can enjoy themselves in a safe and recreational space,” shared MMC Buyeye.

The newly developed community park is part of an upgrading and development rollout focused on nine open spaces across the Metro where illegal dumping sites turn a new leaf for community betterment.
For principal Hubrey Zealand of St Joseph’s Primary School, it was a much-needed win for the children.
“We are grateful to have such a development in this community, it was really needed. Our only hope is that the community can guard against the facility jealously. This is for our children and we need to ensure that it stays in a good condition.”
