The city of Johannesburg has started rolling out free wifi areas around the city.

Numerous free WiFi hotspots are available in public spaces such as libraries, swimming pools, clinics and Rea Vaya bus stations, providing you with endless digital services at your fingertips.

These networks allow people to connect to the internet from their mobile phones, laptops and PCs. Each network user is provided with 300MB of data per day for general use, as well as unlimited access to services, via the free Maru A Jozi portal (www.maruajozi.joburg).

To connect to any of the free WiFi hotspots, follow these three easy steps:

1. Tap settings > WiFi on your device (make sure your WiFi is turned on)

2. Your device will search for available networks. Make sure to choose an open network (one without the lock icon next to it)

3. Tap on the WiFi network you’d like to join – either CoJsmartwifi or AlwaysOn@Joburg_WiFi

And just like that, you’re connected and ready to surf the internet!

There are currently more than 400 active free WiFi hotspots available in various places, including more than half of the libraries and clinics, across Johannesburg’s seven regions.
