A miracle befitting of the season, unfolded on the shores of Christmas Bay in Ballito when a stranded green sea turtle named Noël was rescued by a caring community. Thanks to the quick actions of local residents, Noël is now receiving expert care.

Ballito, South Africa (18 December 2024) – In a most unexpected Christmas miracle and display of community spirit, a green sea turtle named Noël is recovering after a frightening ordeal.

Stranded on the rocky shores of Ballito’s Christmas Bay in KwaZulu-Natal, Noël was rescued thanks to the quick thinking and collaborative efforts of local residents.

After spotting Noël stranded on the rocks, residents initially returned the turtle to the ocean, unaware she had been stranded for a reason, and would not cope well with being back in the water.

“With the immediate action of our community, a potentially fatal situation for this green turtle was quickly turned around. We’re thrilled to report that Noël, named for her timely appearance on our shores, is doing well,” shares the Dolphin Coast Residents and Ratepayers Association (DOCRRA).

The heavy and suspected 30-year-old turtle is speculated to have been stranded due to her condition having air trapped in her lungs, which would prevent her from being able to dive down to feed on the seagrasses or avoid predators.

“Possibly caused by an infection, she is being treated and monitored closely by an expert team of the SAAMBR at Ushaka Sea World.

“The team remains positively hopeful for a full recovery and return to her natural habitat of our KwaZulu Natal coastal waters,” explains DOCRRA.

Noël’s journey reminds us of what can be achieved when a community comes together for a greater good.

The association extends thanks to all the community heroes involved in this rescue.

“We are blessed to share our living space, on land and in the rivers and ocean around us, with incredible wildlife,” DOCRRA adds.
