Champions of big cat conservation FOUR PAWS are getting ready to host a school holiday programme at LIONSROCK where future wildlife heroes might just find their life calling:
Bethlehem, South Africa (18 June 2024) — Global animal welfare organisation and champion of big cat conservation FOUR PAWS are getting ready to host a school holiday programme at their LIONSROCK Big Cat Sanctuary—the place that many lions call home.
Schools, children and their families are all invited to the sanctuary over the June-July holidays as part of the LIONSROCK Holiday Programme, a special programme designed to cultivate a holistic understanding of animal welfare while recognising its essential connection with human well-being and environmental sustainability.
Set to run during the first two weeks of the June-July holidays between Monday to Friday from 9am to 4pm, each day will host a different grade of learners from Grade 0 to 10.
“The educational one-day immersive programme held at our Sanctuary focuses on promoting Animal Welfare while fostering a deeper understanding of the interconnectedness between animals, humans, and the environment. Through a range of engaging activities, children will discover the significance of “One Welfare”, where the well-being of animals, people and the environment are intricately linked,” explained Philemon Ngala, the Education Team Manager at LIONSROCK.
Learners will climb into the fascinating world of big cats and their unique characteristics with an ultimate aim to show the future generations why these animals are worth fighting for.
Through the programme, the team share that they aim to achieve the following:
- Holistic Approach: Introduce children to the concept of One Welfare
- Empathy and Compassion: Instil empathy and compassion in children towards animals; encouraging a sense of responsibility and care for all living beings
- Environmental Stewardship: Raise awareness about the impact of human actions on the environment and how it directly impacts the well-being of animals and communities
- Advocacy and Action: Empower young people to become advocates for animal welfare and champions of sustainability—both within and beyond the sanctuary.
Says FOUR PAWS Director Fiona Miles:
“By fostering empathy and understanding, we aim to nurture a generation of compassionate and responsible individuals committed to making the world a better place for all living beings.”
