The Litterboom Project (TLP) has launched a major clean-up operation after discovering a shocking level of plastic and other debris choking a section of the Black River in Cape Town.
Cape Town, South Africa (23 January 2025) – Jaw-dropping mounds of plastic and just about any kind of garbage you can imagine have been collecting in a large part of the Black River in Cape Town, destined to eventually find its way to the ocean.
The alarming issue was recently brought to the attention of The Litterboom Project (TLP) team who have taken on the mammoth task of clearing the waste at the section of the river that runs through Bridgetown from Langa and connects to the larger Black River system.
A disturbing video shared on Facebook depicts a river transformed into a landfill. A truly shocking site that will require a lot of manpower to remove the buildup of debris and even greater intervention in targeting the root cause of the issue.
“It’s not a site we usually work on, but it’s clear this area needs some attention.
“We’ve decided to focus on cleaning up here because every river matters, and every effort counts,” TLP said.
This marks a continuation of one of the first major projects of the year for the organisation, following the incredible milestone of intercepting 410,000kg of waste in 2024! TLP hopes to build on this, with its sights set on sights on collecting 500,000kg in 2025 and ultimately protecting our rivers, oceans and marine biodiversity.
