A local design festival will see people dedicated to diffusing environmental damage join forces! Here’s why this matters for all of us:

Cape Town, South Africa (06 August, 2023) — A local design festival focused on positive eco-change is around the corner where helpful vibes, circular mindsets and environmental damage diffusers will join forces.

The #cocreateDESIGN FESTIVAL 2023 will be hosted in Cape Town from Monday to Tuesday (7-8 August) at UCT’s Hasso Plattner d-school Afrika.

Here, unpacking the ugly side of environmental damage to find beautiful solutions is the name of the game, and thanks to efforts like this, South Africa has a brighter chance of a sustainable future.

Policymakers, business leaders, everyday eco-heroes, fashion and design pros will all unite, as well as powerhouse organisations leading the charge to circular solutions.

An initiative of the Mission Network of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in SA, the festival has teamed up with the Craft and Design Institute (CDI), the City of Cape Town, GreenCape and Circular South Africa (CSA).

What is Circularity?

A big part of the local design festival is circularity, which encompasses resources that are made to be reused in one way or another. It focuses on the intersection between the environment and the economy; especially as circularity in design provides a lot of opportunities for employment.

This is vital to many industries, especially fashion and tourism.

“What we face is fundamentally a design challenge, one that encompasses how we design policy, and how we design systems, products and business practices. The first step to acting is knowing – that’s a really important goal of these gatherings – alongside cross-sectoral and cross-functional engagement because we need people coming together across complex value chains to work on meaningful solutions.

“We’ve seen how this is possible through initiatives like the Plastics Pact, but how can we foster this collaborative mindset further? And, of course, citizens have power. We need to foster a growing movement of people consuming differently. We invite engagement from across all sectors of society.”—Erica Elk, Group CEO of the CDI.
