Thankfully, no scheming penguins were involved in bringing little Maurice back to Jozi.

Johannesburg, South Africa (25 September 2025) – Do we all remember the second Madagascar movie? The one where they all end up in Africa accidentally? Well, this story is similar. A male bushbaby (aptly named after King Julien’s loyal adviser, Maurice) recently found himself taking a trip across the country, from Fourways in Jozi to Cape Town, on a truck!

Maurice was only discovered and brought to safety when the truck was offloading in the Mother City.

Maurice is not built for Cape Town, where bush babies don’t naturally occur. He’s from a brood in Fourways, a family guy through and through. So when he woke up from a long nap and discovered he was far from home and without his troop, it was up to the kindness and compassion of others to get him back where he needed to be.

Thankfully, the ‘others’ were not a conniving group of penguins, like in the movie.

Instead, it was the Johannesburg Wildlife Veterinary Hospital, the Cape of Good Hope SPCA, Impact for Wildlife and Airlink airline who all worked together to get Maurice a golden ticket back home to Jozi.

It was the best possible outcome for this little bushbaby.

Sadly, because his species does not naturally occur in Cape Town, there was a possibility of euthanasia. Instead, CapeNature recognised the value of allowing Maurice to return back home. Hooray!

And so off he went, into Airlink’s cargo, on yet another wild journey (this time by air, just like in the movie) to reach the Johannesburg Wildlife Veterinary Hospital. They will take the next steps in ensuring the best possible outcome for Maurice.

“For a wild spirit like his, captivity was never an option – and we are overjoyed to be part of his journey back to freedom. Maurice’s story is proof that when hearts unite, no distance is too far, and no challenge too great. We are here waiting for your plane to land and to welcome you back litte traveller,” they shared.
