Missie’s owner rejected her six months ago, after she lost a leg. Now, she’s living her best life in the most loving home!

Diepsloot, South Africa (10 October 2025) – About six months ago, 4Paws Animal Shelter received a call from the owner of a little brown dog who was later named Missie. He was calling for help after Missie had presumably been hit by a speeding car in their Diepsloot neighbourhood.

Her injuries were severe, yet somehow, she managed to drag herself all the way back to her owner’s shack.

When inspectors arrived, they rushed Missie straight to the vet.

It didn’t look good. Her bones were shattered in more places than the vet could count; her right leg was beyond repair and had to be amputated. The surgery went well, but she struggled in her recovery.

“[She] would sit by the door, whimpering softly, confused by the absence of [her] limb.
But day by day, step by shaky step, [she] learned to walk again,” the 4Paws team shared.

Sadly, when the time came to send Missie back home, her owner did not want her anymore.

“When we tried to take her back, her owner said they ‘had no need for a dog with 3 legs.’ Our hearts broke for her…but that’s when we knew she was meant for something greater,” shared 4Paws.

This was only the start of Missie’s magical new chapter.

In July, three months after being taken in 4Paws’ care, our three-legged girl found her home with a family that didn’t see her as broken, but as a little blessing!

“She came into our care and soon after that found the most amazing home! A family who saw her not as broken, but as perfect, and named her Missie,” shares 4Paws.

Another three months later, Missie is loving life alongside her new family.

Updates from the owners show a happy girl living her best life on vacation at the beach, and sporting an award ribbon for scoring 97% in her obedience class. What a good girl!

It makes us smile, seeing how happy Missie is now! She’s endured unimaginable pain and rejection. Now, she’s a happy girl who is showered in love.

4Paws continues this kind of work daily, rescuing, rehabilitating, and rehoming animals who deserve a second chance. If you’d like to contribute towards their efforts, follow this link.
