When neglected spaces become important art! A wall in Parow now stands as a buzz of colour as an important reminder for the world’s tiny heroes—bees.
Parow, South Africa (24 October 2023) — A neglected and decaying wall has undergone a gorgeous makeover in Parow after local artist Wayne Beukes (also known as ‘Conform’) took the unlikely canvas and brushed it with new life and an important message.
Anyone travelling near 198 Voortrekker Road can enjoy the vibrant hum of colour that serves as a symbol of bee protection and conservation.
Dubbed ‘Saved the Bees’, the mural also serves as an upgrade to public spaces in the beloved Cape Town suburb, as facilitated by The Greater Tygerberg Partnership.
“We believe that public art has the ability to transform spaces, ignite conservation and fuel behavioural change, and this mural is a prime example of that,” shared project manager Monique Muller.
Buzzing with a Sweet Message of Awareness
Beyond the beauty, ‘Saved the Bees’ is also a reminder of the ecosystem beyond the eye that relies on public effort and commitment.
Bees play a crucial role in the survival of all life, given their role in our world’s biodiversity. Their pollination is essential to flourishing natural landscapes and food security, and if they were ever to go extinct, our species (among many others) wouldn’t be able to survive.
The mural then, is also a bright reminder of the role the Parow community and its visitors have in protecting the planet’s tiny heroes through sustainable efforts.
