All heroes need a break now and then, and if anyone’s earned a day of sun, surf, and sand, it’s the Owl Rescue Centre’s extraordinary working dogs.
South Africa (18 August 2025) – Flash has built a reputation as one of South Africa’s hardest-working canine heroes.
The blue-eyed boy spends most of his days alongside the Owl Rescue Centre team, using his nose and nimble feet to help his team track down injured wildlife that are on the move and in need of urgent help.
Now seven years old, he is the centre’s expert scent-tracker who has made headlines before for his amazing work.
From owls to otters, tortoises to vervet monkeys, he’s found them all, often when hope was running thin. With years of training and a bond with his people that’s clear to anyone who meets them, Flash is often the hero who gives injured and distressed wildlife another shot at life.
But even for the most devoted working dogs, there’s more to life than missions.
This week, supporters got a sweet update: Flash was spotted taking it easy, lapping up the sea air and making the most of a much-needed rest day at the beach, a long way from his home at the Owl Rescue Centre in Hartbeespoort.
Playing alongside Flash in the froth was his K9 hero buddy, Chikita, who joined the crew in 2024. Still a young pup, but just as deserving of a trip to the beach.
Watching them soak up time by the sea, you’d never guess the work they put in behind the scenes. Commenters shared their love and appreciation for the K9’s handler, Brendan, who knows the value of a good run on the beach. Every doggy’s dream.
“Working dogs love to work. They got bored if not mentally stimulated. It’s good to change things up. A beach day is awesome!”

A change of pace, a place to run off-lead, and a little room to play help keep Flash and Chikita sharp and happy, ready for the next rescue when the call comes.
As they put it, “Some days are tougher, those are the days where we don’t end our shift running on the beach. Today wasn’t one of those days.”
