Natures Valley Trust recently released a group of penguins back into the wild after rehabilitating them for a number of ailments. The release was very exciting.
Last year November we shared the story of 10 very happy penguins who were released after months of rehabilitation. They waddled down the beach past a line of eager humans, back into their natural habitat.
The Natures Valley Trust has just done another release in partnership with a number of organisations. The penguins are taken in and rehabilitated by the Tenikwa Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre. The centre is of the largest active wildlife rehabilitation centres in the Western Cape. They attend to a diverse variety of animals accepting both terrestrial and marine species.
Every year, the rehabilitation centre cares for 230 to 300 different birds. Their facility is open to the public and works to create awareness around saving birdlife as well as small mammals.
The penguin releases have become a popular event as they inspire hope. Many people visit the beach to watch as the little African Penguins make their way back into their natural environment.
“Thanks to our partners Tenikwa Wildlife Rehabilitation and Awareness Centre for doing an awesome job getting these penguins ready, and to BirdLife South Africa, Birdlife Plettenberg Bay, ORCA Foundation, and WESSA Wildlife and Environment Society of South Africa Blue Flag Stewards for making the day such a success.”
Nature’s Valley Trust had two talented individuals film the latest release, which you can watch below. You can find out more about the rehabilitation centre here.
